Intelligent Tutoring

Intelligent tutoring systems provide students with additional support that is specific to them.

Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) can offer personalized, adaptive, and interactive tutoring.

How they work:

Well, it works very similarly to how adaptive learning works. With a combination of AI and data analytics, ITS can assess a student’s current knowledge, skills, and learning preferences to offer a personalized learning experience.

ITS act as a virtual tutor that can assist with a variety of subjects at all different grade and learning levels. All content from ITS is personalized to the student’s skills and learning preferences and may include interactive exercises, readings, or quizzes.

ITS can offer immediate feedback and support. They can identify when a student is struggling or excelling and adapt the content to meet the needs of that student. They can explain why an answer is incorrect and provide additional content to clarify a concept.

All student interactions with ITS are continuously monitored to track progress. This allows the ITS to collect data on student performance and make data-driven adjustments to the learning course.

Why is this important?

Students only need a device with an internet connection to access ITS. This means they can do it just about anywhere at any time. This flexibility makes learning more convenient and accessible and reduces some barriers to traditional tutoring.

ITS can offer tutoring on a wide array of subjects from math to languages and even professional development.

While it can be used for self-directed learning, it can also complement traditional instruction in the classroom. Educators can use the data collected by the ITS to adapt and improve their instruction.

Who’s using ITS now?

While ITS are still not widely implemented in classrooms at this time, many sites and applications that utilize this technology including Khan Academy and Duolingo.
